A new renaissance fair is launching this summer near Augusta

Rita Smallcombe, promotions coordinator for the new festival,
said a group of experienced renaissance fair goers, or “rennies,” decided to
start the festival early this year after hearing Silver Leaf would be
“After Silver Leaf closed, we thought we need another
festival. Michigan is full of rennies,” Smallcombe said. “We’ll have it in the
same timeframe. People are used to going in July.”

The BlackRock Medieval SummerFest will have a team of
experienced renaissance fair entertainers and staff members, according to Smallcombe, who has 20
years of experience working for six different Michigan renaissance fairs.
“We have some entertainers renaissance fair people will
recognize,” she said. “They’ve been around the fair circuit.”
Among the scheduled entertainers are the Knights of Valour, the
Michigan Highland Throwers and the Dueling Fools.
Smallcombe said the site of the fair, 13215 M-96 near
Augusta, is “absolutely amazing.”
“It’s fully wooded,” she said. “When the canopy comes in
fully, it will be awesome.”
Like the Silver Leaf Renaissance Faire, BlackRock will also
feature vendors, music, entertainment and people dressed in period costumes.
With already , organizers are
expecting a strong turnout to the inaugural festival.
“We have a strong base of fair goers here, so we’re hoping,”
The festival runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, rain or shine.
