The Legend of Catherine Hill Apple Day at Nunney Castle

Back in the mists of time, two men whose names have long been forgotten, rode off with a sack of apples from Nunney Castle. They were chased by soldiers from the castle, who caught them at the top of Catherine Hill. They paid dearly for their crime – the soldiers beheaded them and then rolled their heads down the hill.

They betted on the winner, with ‘winner takes all’ for the head that reached the bottom first. They deemed this such good fun that they decided to do it every year – and so a tradition was born. These days it is nice to know that they use apples and not heads!
